Lassie and Corey are trapped in a landslide. Lassie is injured but leaves Corey to seek help. Two college students find her on the road, then take refuge from a storm in a ghost town that's become the headquarters for crooks in the business of helping felons escape the country. The students are locked in a room but Lassie escapes. When Lassie reaches the ranger station she finds Corey has been rescued. She leads Corey, the ranger, and the sheriff to the town, and the students are saved. Crime kingpin Dan Darvey is nabbed as he tries to flee and the entire gang is taken into custody.

Two crooks use their electronic equipment to jam Air Force radio controls and force a top secret missile to crash. When Lassie and Corey find the missile, a section is missing. Lassie picks up a trail that leads to the abandoned Thunder Mountain Mine where the crooks are making plans to sell the missile's sensitive camera to the highest bidder. Lassie disarms one crook and the other crook is disarmed by an excited mule. The Air Force retrieves the missile.
