The 12-issue Western comic book series Lassie was based on the Emmy Award-winning CBS television series of the same name broadcast between 1954 and 1973. Both the CBS television series and Western comic book series followed the adventures of a rough collie named Lassie and a farmboy named Timmy, and, later, the adventures of Lassie and several forest rangers. When the Dell series expired, Western picked up the Lassie and Timmy stories for five issues with settings in Africa. Secondary features included 4-page stories about a Burmese teen and his pet elephant called The Elephant Boy, and text stories with African themes. Other regular features included inside front cover text articles with black and white illustrations about the peoples of Africa. A reprint from M-G-M's Lassie series followed the last of the five Lassie and Timmy issues, before forest ranger Corey Stuart was introduced for five issues. Timmy was never seen again and Lassie was back in the States. Corey was dropped for the last Western issue and replaced by rangers Bob and Scott. All front covers were full color photos depicting either Lassie and Timmy, or Lassie and Corey, or Lassie, Bob, and Scott. The cover of the reprint issue was a painting of Lassie in the jungle from M-G-M's Lassie #25. Secondary features in the forest ranger issues included joke and cartoon pages, and illustrated text articles about nature subjects.
