Starting with this story and "There's Something About a Soldier" in the same issue, Mr. Smythe becomes an arch-conservative arguing with the kids about social and political issues. This new approach may have been inspired by the smash success of the TV series "All In the Family" a few months earlier; Mr. Smythe's new characterization is very similar to Archie Bunker.
