Page 7, panels 3-6: Magda Eisenhardt’s character is briefly mentioned for the first time as Magneto’s late wife. This information, together with that published in August 1979 a month earlier, pages 2-3 in The Avengers #186, infers that Magneto is, in fact, the natural father of Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, alias the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Page 11, panels 5-6: Various characters cameo appearances pop out in Lilandra’s ball scene. Notably, Dirac, Shakati and his two minions, Arak and Arion (Marvel Preview #11, June 1977). More surprisingly, the outlines of Popeye the Sailor Man (panel 5, right side) and the Phantom Stranger (panel 5, left) appear as Easter eggs. To note: the Phantom Stranger is a DC character.

A famous quote from William Shakespeare inspires this episode’s title: "There’s something rotten in the state of Denmark" (Hamlet. Act 1, scene 4). From this issue to X-Men #128, authors will refer titles to some famous Shakespeare’s quotes.

Page 15, panel 4: Originally called Mutant X, Kevin MacTaggert adopts the alias of Proteus for the first time in this issue. In Greek mythology, Proteus is a sea divinity. He can foretell the future and change his shape. The term ‘protean,’ which defines someone or something that can take many forms, is etymologically originated from Proteus.

As mentioned in the previous issue, this episode’s title is once again directly inspired by a famous quote from William Shakspeare: "How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child!" (King Lear. Act 1, scene 4). This title links to the parentage between Moira MacTaggert and Mutant X revealed in this comic (page 8).

Unlike previous titles, this episode’s one isn’t directly inspired by a quote from William Shakespeare’s works. Nevertheless, 'The Quality of Hatred!' could be considered a counterpoint to ‘the quality of mercy,’ one famous quote from the British author, extracted from his Merchant of Venice play (Act 4, scene 1). For as Proteus shows no mercy for his father and, besides, uses the form of a woman, Jennie Banks; that could be considered a parallel to the character of Portia, disguised as a man, in Shakespeare’s crucial play’s scene that refers to ‘the quality of mercy.’

From X-Men # 125, the titles of each episode are inspired by a quote from Shakespeare. That is the last: "Then imitate the action of the tiger" (Henry V. Act III, Scene I). Its meaning is linked to the sentence it precedes, "Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood ..." which refers to the final fight against Proteus.
