Supermarket clerk Shirley is engaged to mechanic Dan; they are saving their money to get married and buy a “service station and motor court upstate.” Dan gets his draft notice, which puts their plans on hold. Shirley makes friends with bargirl Dotty and becomes a “percentage girl,” getting a cut of what their dates spend at a nightclub. Shirley tells Dan she’s a model, but when she’s arrested after a club brawl, Dan learns the truth and breaks up with her.

Elias learns the truth from Danny and he says he wouldn’t want to break up two people who love each other. Danny has left town, but he returns and is reunited with Esther.

Kitty is engaged to Emory. She asks his boss to excuse Emory from a business trip so they can prepare for their wedding, which makes Emory angry. When Emory’s mother dies, he says his father will have to live with him and Kitty after their marriage. To avoid this, Kitty goes to a matrimonial agency and finds a new wife for the elder Kendall. However, just in time it’s discovered that the woman is a fraud who poisoned two previous husbands for their insurance. Emory breaks up with Kitty. She makes amends by caring for his father, and Emory eventually takes her back.
