Theatre usher Joyce decides to emulate business executive Miss Randall and actress Rita Moor to improve her life, even though they have bad reputations for being ruthless. She betrays her friend Harriet to get a promotion and steals her boss Bob from his girlfriend. Bob learns of her schemes and breaks up with her. Joyce discovers Rita and Miss Randall are not worthy of her admiration. Joyce quits and starts over at another theatre, this time earning her promotions honestly. She is also reunited with Bob.

Sondra selfishly exploits her mother and argues with her boyfriend Marty when he objects. She dumps Marty so wealthy Rand can take her to a society dance. While she’s there, her mother suffers a “complete physical collapse due to nervous and physical exhaustion.” Sondra changes her ways, taking a seamstress job so she can care for her mother. Marty returns, having earned enough money to buy a gas station in town. Since Sondra is no longer selfish, he decides they can be married.

Luisa returns home a huge snob after studying in France, and views the small college town where her father teaches to be boring and provincial. She finds student Dennis appealing until she discovers he does handyman work to help pay his tuition. Instead, Luisa dates Clive, who plans to be a diplomat. However, she sees he is “entirely false” and uses people for his own ends. She realizes Dennis is the one for her, but he wins a scholarship to study in Europe. Luisa hopes when he returns that they can get back together.
