Jerry proposes to Helen, but reveals that he’s a widower with a young son, Danny. Helen agrees that Danny can live with her and her mother until the marriage, but finds that the boy constantly reminds her that she wasn’t Jerry’s first love. Helen accuses Jerry of just wanting a caretaker for his son, and they break up. Helen realises she’s been selfish and takes Danny back. Jerry decides Helen is now wife material again.

Small-time carny Jim meets Sharon, whose father is wealthy. Jim and Sharon fall in love, but he’s really interested in her money. He and Sharon leave with the carnival, but Jim won’t marry her until he’s sure he’ll get money from her father. Sharon becomes hard and cynical in the carny world and Jim decides to send her home. He tells Sharon he never loved her, and her father picks her up. Jim leaves the carnival as well, and “some day, when I feel I’m worthy,” he’ll see Sharon again.

Louise Otis; Bob; Cal Brett; Gary Drake; Bobby; Nancy
Louise breaks up with Bob and goes to New York to make her fortune, planning to return to marry him when she does. Louise is soon a top model and when Bob asks her to come home, she refuses. They break up: “You’ve got gold fever Louise, and you’ll never be cured.” Louise becomes fashion editor of a national magazine and dates Gary, but turns down his marriage proposal: “It’s a tough world for a woman...I’m not going to throw away everything for marriage.” Louise is named head editor, then goes home to see Bob: he’s married and has two children. Louise: “I’ve messed up my life.” She leaves.
