Torpedo is patrolling Clariton when he is attacked by the newly re-formed Hybrid. On a snowy road, Rom saves a prison road crew from a runaway prison transport. The convicts trick him by telling them that they are chained up because they are slaves. Rom follows the transport back to the prison to free the rest of the "slaves" but ends up in a battle with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants who are masterminding an escape. Mystique, Rogue and Destiny get away but stop for shelter in a house inhabited by Hybrid.

Mystique, Rogue and Destiny battle Hybrid until they learn that Rom is their common enemy and decide to team up. Rom learns from Torpedo that Hybrid has returned and flies off to battle him. During the ensuing fight, Destiny learns that Hybrid plans on breeding with mutant females (including the Brotherhood gals) so they turn on him. Rogue touches Hybrid to absorb his powers while Rom blasts him with his neutralizer. In the aftermath, Rogue discovers that when she touched Rom, she got a sense of his strong moral center and was attracted to the feeling of being good.

Rom enters a cave where he meets Quasimodo who tells him that he can make a clone of his human body and transfer his consciousness therein. Rom accepts the offer, little knowing that Quasimodo is working with a coven of Wraiths. Rom is thrilled when he awakens as a man once again.

Quasimodo has cloned a copy of Rom's human body and turned him into a man once again. Rom is thrilled until his new body begins to rapidly deteriorate. Quasimodo possesses Rom's vacant space armor and turns on the Wraiths he was allied with. Dr. Dredd and Starshine show up and begin to battle Rom, not realizing it is now someone else inside of the armor. Starshine drives Quasimodo from Rom's body as the dying human Rom chokes out Dredd. Brandy (who is now in the Starshine armor), recognizes the decaying human as Rom just as he collapses in the throes of death.

Unaware of these developments, Rom whines incessantly about his lost humanity until Starshine is able to snap him out of it and convince him that life is still worth living.
