Synopsis:
Destitute, Eduardo begs for money in the big city, walking many miles while carrying Luba until reaching Hilda and Ofelia's place in Isleta. Over a year later, feeling haunted by Maria, he leaves, shovel in hand, presumably to find better work. He's found dead on a beach, possibly murdered. Ofelia, Ruben and Gina head out of town with baby Luba. Ofelia gets off the car to take care of Luba's soiled diapers, then hears gunshots. Attacked by unknown assailants for their leftism, Ofelia's friends are brutally raped and murdered, while she is shot multiples times and buried alive. She survives.

Part two of the earliest origins of Luba and her mother Maria, her father Eduardo and her cousin Ofelia.
In part eight of the story, it's made clear in a conversation between Salas and Garza that the murders were a clear attempt to send a message to leftists in the North.
