Erica has spells where she wakes up in strange places with no memory of where she's been. She is usually able to conceal these events from her parents. However, she is scared after her latest episode when she wakes up naked on the beach. At her eighteenth birthday party, she is excited to see that Patrick, who is disliked by her father, has been allowed to come to the party. Running to him, she trips and falls into the pool. When she emerges, she is revealed as a mermaid.

This is where it all began.
The story reveals that Erica was taken from her real mother by Belinda at birth and given to Howard and Carissa to be raised until their Dark Master comes to claim her. That day comes on Erica's 18th birthday when she discovers she is a mermaid. Erica escapes them and is found by Samantha, who tries to help her. Erica trusts Samantha, but wants to contact Patrick before leaving. However, Patrick is working with the forces of the Dark Lord and helps capture Erica.

Erica! No. She's in danger.
After being captured by Patrick and her foster parents, Erica is transformed into a hideous sea monster. Samantha Darren finds her and tries to help, but fails. Erica attacks Samantha and escapes. Esmeralda finds Erica and returns her to human form, using her powers to allow Erica to find her real father and mother, although neither reunion ends well. Emotionally weak from the shock of recent revelations, Erica agrees to Esmeralda's bargain to bring pain to those who have hurt her. In exchange, Erica has to give Esmeralda "one small thing".

Stephen Chambers; Sara; Lucy; Belinda; Little Mermaid; Sea Witch; The Prince
Lucy's plan to have Stephen fall in love with Sara seems to be working until Sara discovers that Stephen was just using her and is now seeing someone else. Belinda gives Lucy a gun that Sara takes to Stephen's apartment. She fires a shot into a vase, but can't bring herself to shoot Stephen. The police arrive and arrest Sara, now pregnant. This mirrors the fairy tale Lucy never finished where the Little Mermaid can break her deal with the Sea Witch by killing the Prince, but she can't bring herself to do it and ends up being killed by the Sea Witch.

The ending of this story, with Sara in jail and pregnant with Stephen's child, sets up the four chapter Myths & Legends story line presented earlier in this volume. In the subsequent story, we see that Belinda arranged all the events with Lucy and Sara so that Sara's child, Erica, could be taken after her birth in preparation for eventual use in service of the Dark One.
