G.I. Joe
G.I. Joe [Duke; Outback; Ripcord; Wild Bill; Lift-Ticket; Armadillo [Rumbler] (first appearance); Char-Broil (first appearance); Hardball (first appearance); Muskrat (first appearance); Hit 'N Run (first appearance); Capt. Jeffries (Ghost Rider)]; Cobra [Cobra Commander [Fred VII]; Firefly; Dr. Mindbender; Tele-Vipers; B.A.T.S.; Cobra troopers; Cobra Officers; Gyro-Vipers (Mamba pilots); Secto-Vipers (Bugg drivers); Air-Vipers]
The Joes and Cobras battle over a new but unstable island that has emerged from the ocean close to the location of Cobra Island, risen up from the underwater quake the Joes caused back in issue #'s 41 and 42. Both sides fail to keep control due to the island mass eventually sinking back under due its instability, and as the Joes are airlifted out in time, the Cobras have to swim home, their air transports not returning in time (not to mention their possible aquatic transports, the two Bugg vehicles present, were destroyed by the Joes new heavy weapons vehicle, the Rolling Thunder).

Armadillo {http://www.yojoe.com/action/88/armadillo.shtml for reference} for some reason was named Rumbler in the series (not to be confused with Rumbler, another Joe driver of the same name who had his own toy in 1987, the Crossfire remote control jeep {http://www.yojoe.com/action/87/rumbler.shtml for reference}). perhaps another character name infringement (?), given Marvel had a villain named Armadillo, much like Capt. Jeffries can't be remembered as Ghost Rider.

of other note: the tv commercial shows the Rolling Thunder invading Cobra Island and destroying their headquarters, but the comic has nothing to do with the animated commercial whatsoever.
