Fleming H. Revell took over publishing "Everybody's Paper" from his brother-in-law, the Rev. Dwight L. Moody in 1869, the next year he started his own publishing company, publishing Evangelical Christian books.
In 1978, the company was sold to Scott, Foresman and Company; then in 1983, to Zondervan Corporation; again in 1986, to Guideposts Associates; and finally in 1992 to Baker Book House Company.
Revell's primary comic output was under the Spire name from 1972 to 1984. However, beginning in 1982, the rights to some of the Spire comics were picked up by Barbour Publishing, a company started by a former Revell executive.
