Sir Hugh Denison acquired a number of Australian newspapers, creating the Sydney-focused newspaper chain that became known as Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL) in 1929. Rival newspaper operators, Fairfax and Packer (ACP) had financial and strategic interests in ANL, with John Fairfax & Sons Ltd ultimately acquiring the company in 1953. ANL's magazine subsidiary, Sungravure Ltd, was part sold in 1954 to Odhams Press Ltd (UK). The ANL name was used on comics throughout the 1950s. In 1987, ACP ultimately purchased Fairfax Magazines. ANL is most famous for its unsuccessful 1951 legal battle to prevent 'Ginger Meggs' creator Jimmy Bancks from taking his creation to Consolidated Press after a breach of contract dispute.
