Civil War was a massive crossover event pitting hero against hero over the issue of superhero registration.
The "Road to Civil War" which led up to this limited series ran through Amazing Spider-Man (Marvel, 1999 series) #529-531, Fantastic Four (Marvel, 1998 series) #536, 537 and the New Avengers: Illuminati (Marvel, 2006 series) #1 one-shot.
There was a Civil War: Opening Shot giveaway to promote the limited series and a number of one-shots and crossovers that tied in.
