As revealed in issue #270, Shayde disguises himself as the Eighth Doctor and pretends to regenerate into a "Ninth Doctor." The false Ninth Doctor who first appears in this issue and continues into the next story-arc had previous appeared in the story "Party Animals" in issue #173. This Doctor, portrayed at the time as a future incarnation met by the Seventh Doctor, is visually based on the actor Nicholas Briggs, who had played the Doctor in a fan-produced series of audio dramas which were released roughly at the same time as "Party Animals."
