This reprint is a prime example of two early phenomena at Charlton: (1) re-purposing inventory material from other publishers; and (2) editing reprints to appease Comics Code Authority censors. As previous indexers noted, the name of the lead character (Cody of the Pony Express) was changed to Bart Wade, and the wild stallion was changed from "Panther" to "Black Fury." But the entire encounter between Cody/Bart and Panther/Black Fury was rewritten. In the original, the bad guys shoot the heroes' horse in order to stop his mission, and the hero (Cody) has to "stalk" and then "break" the horse (Panther). In the revision, Bart's horse is only lamed as he falls off (because he, not the horse, was the target) and lies unconscious as the villains ride away. Then Black Fury nobly comes forward and literally offers himself to Bart as his new ride. Several panels from the original are eliminated, while at least two new ones are added, and multiple panels are both re-scripted and at least partly redrawn to change their meaning. The panel that in the original portrays Cody nearly being bucked off Panther has him saying, "I-I can't hang on much longer!" The same picture in the revision is now supposedly showing Bart and Black Fury riding off as a team: "It's hard to believe! Black Fury wants to help me--or he would throw me sky high!"

Other changes are clearly made to mollify the censors, since they are unnecessary to adapt the plot to different characters. For example, at the bottom of page five, Cody says, "But how would you know that, Ace, unless you were the hombre that set those killers on me?" to which Ace replies, "Cody! Get him men! Shut his mouth with lead!" In the tamer world of the Comics Code this interchange becomes: "But how would you know that, Ace, unless you were the hombre that set those men on me?" with the response, "Wade! Get him men! Shut his mouth!" Similar patches of narration and dialogue are watered down throughout the rest of the story, along with visual changes to eliminate sound effects and tone down violence and gunplay.

Unknown pencils and inks per Nick Caputo. Previous indexer credited Stan Campbell.
