17-year-old Clara marries Ken before his military deployment. On their honeymoon, he’s reported killed in an avalanche. Clara takes a job as governess for widower Tod’s daughter so she can remain at the site until Ken’s body is recovered in the spring, but stays on even afterwards. Tod introduces Clara to his employee Herb and they date, but Herb’s mother disapproves. Tod tells Clara that she needs to stop mourning and get on with her life, as he intends to do; they realize they love each other.

Ella works for Bill, a middle-aged newcomer who appears to be altruistically helping improve their small town. She admires Bill and even falls in love with him, so she refuses to listen to her boyfriend Jim, who claims Bill must have ulterior motives. Eventually, Jim exposes Bill as the head of a company which is making money from all of the civic “improvements” Bill has proposed. Ella apologizes and marries Jim.
