Lafayette loves camp life and proves a social disaster at Versailles. He becomes a father, and at 18 is commissioned a captain and inducted into the Freemasons. Fired up by the secret society's revolutionary ideals, he tries to join the Revolution in America. France is secretly aiding the rebels, but Lafayette's celebrity would reveal the secret. The king blocks his plans, but the wealthy Lafayette buys his own ship and slips to sea with a few friends.

Pretty glorious.
Lafayette and his party slip into South Carolina, then make their way hundreds of miles to Philadelphia. Officials there decline their bid to join the Revolution, previous French officers having proved useless at best. Once they become aware of Lafayette's wealth and royal connections, they immediately commission him a 19 year-old major general (without pay).

In Lafayette's absence, Baron von Steuben has trained the American army into a significant fighting force. As the British withdraw from Philadelphia across New Jersey, Washington orders Lafayette to harry the enemy's rear guard. But General Charles Lee demands command of the van as Lafayette's superior in rank, begins his attack late, then inexplicably orders a headlong retreat. Washington and Lafayette take command on the field, resume the attack, and after long fierce fighting win a flawed victory. As night falls they sleep side by side on the ground.

The Battle of Monmouth was the longest single battle of the war.
When a French fleet arrives with an army, Washington orders Lafayette to help coordinate an attack on British forces in Rhode Island. But Admiral d'Estaing moves very slowly, and General Sullivan despises the French. The combined attacks never come off, allied relations fray, and Lafayette decides to return home for a time.

At last it arrives, but General Rochambeau refuses to act before spring, which is still months away. The British, meanwhile, run wild in the south, capturing General Lincoln, routing General Gates, and killing General de Kalb.

When he was eleven years old, Benedict Arnold ran into a burning barn, climbed to the peak, and walked the ridgepole from end to end.
Benedict Arnold commands American forces courageously and successfully, but repeatedly alienates people and is passed over for promotion. His second wife, who is friendly with a British officer, encourages him to betray George Washington, and the fortress of West Point, to the British. The plot is exposed at the last minute. The Arnolds escape, but Major André is hanged as a spy.
