Fran is engaged to writer Jim, but is in no hurry to get married, wanting to try an acting career first. She winds up singing, scantily-clad, in a New York cabaret. Jim finds her but she insists her career is doing well, introducing a stranger as her "agent." The stranger is Nick Ferranti and he hires her to sing in his club. Fran falls for Nick but he kills a man in a gambling dispute and is sent to prison. Fran is hired by a big producer for a Broadway play--arranged by her faithful ex-boyfriend Jim. Fran agrees to marry Jim.

May and Chick quit their small-time dance act and open The Silver Dollar club near the Big Bend Dam construction site. May's sexy dancing is the big attraction; Chick rakes in money from liquor and gambling. May is unhappy at the sleazy nature of it all. Construction worker Deek Weems thinks The Silver Dollar is sinful and clashes with Chick. Business falls off and May tries to ruin Deek's reputation by kissing him in public. Deek apologizes for judging her too harshly and departs. May and Chick realize they love each other.
