Lois Linder; Grace Davis; Paul Davis; Bill Carter; Mrs. Carter; Helen; Ralph Brennan; Uncle Ned; Mrs. Linder
Lois has prejudices against various types of people: people who wear glasses (“a bunch of shifty, sneaking smart alecs!”), “little men” (“so aggressive and cocky!”) and redheads (bad tempers). She is attracted to Bill, but his red hair makes her suspicious, and she ruins a business deal for him by incorrectly telling her boss that Bill has “a temper like a roaring lion.” Lois is befriended by Helen (wears glasses) and her Uncle Ned (short) and admits she’s a “petty, bigoted, prejudiced fool!” Uncle Ned will finance Bill’s invention and Bill and Lois reconcile.

Marion Carter; Glen Howard
Marion fantasizes about the future, but never does anything concrete. She opens a shop to sell figurines she has sculpted, but hasn’t finished any. Architect Glen and Marion fall in love, and she agrees to sculpt a model of his design for a contest. However, she procrastinates and Glen misses the deadline. He breaks up with her: “with you, [dreams] are merely substitutes for reality.” Marion finishes the model and sends it to the foundation that had sponsored the contest. The foundation offers Marion a job as sculptor and hires Glenn to design their new building. Glen and Marion reconcile.

Kay; Dan Winters; Tim Whalen; Bill; Mrs. Winters; Kay's father; Kay's mother
Kay lives in a coal town and dislikes it, especially the dirt and pollution. She meets visitor Dan when his car breaks down and is attracted to how handsome and clean he is. They fall in love, but when Kay visits Dan in his hometown, she discovers he’s a “core molder” in a steel factory rather than “an executive—-somebody who didn’t have to dirty his hands!” When a flood threatens her town, Kay rushes home and is impressed by how important coal is to the country. Kay now knows “dirty hands are nothing to be ashamed of when they’re dirtied doing a real job!” She and Dan are reunited.
