Ruthie is an introvert who is afraid to “meet new people, try and fit in with them.” She meets Steve when she’s injured in an accident, and they fall in love. When she’s discharged from the hospital, Ruthie avoids meeting Steve's friends, and when Steve asks her to run his stationery store in his absence, she feigns a “relapse” to get out of this chore. Steve says “you refuse to make any personal adjustment to people or to life itself!” and breaks up with her. Ruthie decides to change her life and accepts a job as an occupational therapist.
