Janet; Arnie; Greg; Tommy; Sally
High-school senior Janet takes a job as a babysitter. She finds herself attracted to the child's father Greg, and is outraged that Greg's wife Sally goes out every night, dressed in slinky gowns. Janet and Greg fall in love, over the objections of her mother and her boyfriend Arnie. Janet discovers that Greg is a lazy loser who forces Sally to support their family as a nightclub cigarette girl, which explains her nightly absences. Greg begs Sally not to leave him, and Janet is humiliated. Janet has a nervous breakdown but will recover, with Arnie’s help.

Sheila; Jim Turner
Sheila boasts about her boyfriend Jim, inflating his importance as a newspaper reporter. She is envious of how her family dotes on her sister Elsie’s prominent husband. Jim is embarrassed by her constant boasting. Jim gets a “very confidential—-and maybe dangerous” assignment to investigate political corruption but Sheila exposes it by bragging to her friends: Jim is fired. When Jim and Sheila are abducted by gangsters, she risks her life to call for help. They’re rescued, Jim gets his job back, and Sheila and Jim make up.
