Although she already has a boyfriend, fellow college student Jimmy, Mary dates Roger after he wrong-number dials her home telephone. Roger is a “rising young engineer,” who takes Mary to a nightclub and makes drunken advances to her. His scheme is foiled by the arrival of Jimmy and Roger’s indignant wife Lucy. Mary feels she has been a “stupid, cheap little fool” and has now lost Jimmy’s love as well, because she was “a reckless pickup!”

Aspiring opera singer Della dates lawyer George but is determined to “save my love for someone who could help my career by giving me financial backing.” Della develops lung problems and has to go to a sanitarium, although she doesn’t have money to pay for it. Della and doctor Bert fall in love, but he says he’s going to marry wealthy Helen, whose money can help his career. Della realises this is how she treated George and tracks him down: he’s the one who secretly paid for her medical treatment. Della says she’ll marry him even though he isn’t rich.

June’s husband and child are killed in an auto accident. She contemplates suicide, but instead takes a job as governess for Carol, whose mother is in the hospital. June finds herself falling in love with Carol’s father Fred, and doesn’t want to break up their family. Before she dies, Fred’s wife asks Carol to say on to care for Carol and help Fred. Carol and Fred eventually get married and form a new family of their own.

Betty loves Mike, a fellow college student who works in a coffee shop to pay his tuition, but he is unaware of her feelings. “Local campus hero” Steve professes his love to Betty and Mike withdraws. Betty begins to date Steve, although she still loves Mike. Steve eventually tells Betty that he has “found self-respect” and knows Betty and Mike love each other, so he gives her up. Betty and Mike reconcile.
