She promises to stop matchmaking but is unable to do so. Newcomer Diane sets her cap for Steve, and when he responds, Alice quits her job. However, Steve comes to his senses and they reconcile.

Janet’s father has a minor job in a department store and puts on a snobbish front for everyone else. Janet falls for crane operator Ralph but her father thinks he’s not good enough for her. Janet suggests Ralph “aim for something higher” but he doesn’t “want to be an engineer or an executive. I like being a crane operator,” and they break up. Janet takes a job as a waitress in Ralph’s favourite restaurant hoping to see him again, but learns he’s gone to work in South America.

Gail works as a secretary in her father’s factory and convinces him to offer Ricky—-who has fallen on hard times--a job. Ricky accepts and he and Gail reconcile.

Kathy and Walt are engaged but he quits his job at a brokerage firm because he wants to be an artist. Kathy goes along with his plan even though it means their marriage has to be postponed. Walt is a failure as an artist and Kathy catches him in an embrace with her best friend Paula. Paula tells Kathy she just wanted to prove that Walt was a loser who is ruining Kathy’s life; they walk out, leaving Walt alone.

17-year-old orphan Polly goes to live with her two wealthy spinster aunts, who turn out to be prudish and domineering. They compel Polly to assist Gertrude the maid and forbid her to be friends with chauffeur Danny, but the two young people fall in love anyway. Polly’s aunts fire Danny so he and Polly elope. When the aunts try to intervene, the justice of the peace and police chief flirt with the older ladies and convince them to permit the wedding.
