Artist Jean’s career is managed by his girlfriend Paulette, who forbids him to paint portraits and insists he only do landscapes and still lifes. Claudia introduces Paul to impressionism and Paulette breaks up with him as a result. Jean and Claudia fall in love. Meanwhile, Paulette has a new protege, Henri, and forbids him to paint portraits.

Marva later learns Alec has become engaged to “a simple, unaffected kid” and realises her social climbing ruined their relationship.
