Model Joyce agrees to rent a safe deposit box under the name “Caroline Gray” for her boyfriend Nick. He’s indicted for racketeering and she flees to New York and falls in love with artist Tim. Fellow rooming house resident John, a religious sort, urges her to repent of her sins. However, when the hypocritical John makes a pass at Joyce, Tim rescues her. He says the whole Nick situation was resolved long ago and she has nothing to fear.

Laura lies about having a sick father to get a job as a theatre usher. When bus driver Peter proposes marriage, Laura puts him off by claiming her father needs her income. Laura dates wealthy Andre, lying to him as well, and borrows money from Pete under false pretenses. However, Andre finally admits he has a fiancée and breaks up with Laura. Pete also dumps her when he learns she’s been cheating on him. Laura goes to work as a waitress to repay Pete’s money. They reconcile.
