After Rickie’s parents are killed, she is consoled by her high school sweetheart Marty. He goes off to college and she attends nursing school. Rickie and Paul bond over their shared tragedies and Rickie wonders if she loves him, but gives Paul’s case to another nurse at Marty’s insistence. Later, Rickie sees Paul and learns he’s engaged to her replacement. This reinforces her belief that Marty is the man she truly loves.

Nurse Tam falls in love with new doctor Bob. They date, but he confesses he’s engaged to a “girl back home” and “no one else is allowed to come into my life!” Tam is upset, but Bob later admits he lied: he didn’t want to fall in love until his career was established. Tam still isn’t sure Bob loves her, so she asks her roommate Mary to go on a date with Bob and make a play for him. Tam overhears Bob tell Mary that he loves her. Tam quits her job and leaves, but Bob tracks her down; the man she saw with Mary wasn’t him, but her secret boyfriend. Tam and Bob get back together.
