Mary Harper; Uncle Jack; Fred Randolph; Lefty Smith; Walter Kent
Mary is an orphan who lives with her invalid Uncle Jack. Their poverty means she has no social life in high school. Fellow student Fred is nice to her but the other girls are mean and catty. After graduation, Mary gets a job as a waitress at a low-class “hash house” to save money for college. Fred asks her to marry him but his father objects and Fred backs down. When Uncle Jack dies, Mary moves away and enrolls in college. She dates Walter but he dumps her when he learns of her lower-class origins. Fred apologizes to Mary and they reconcile.

Betty Halliday [Betty Wilson]; Tom Barrett; Horace; Miss Abbott; Mr. Brown; Aunt Kate; Mr. Barrett; Mrs. Barrett
Wealthy Betty fears she’ll never find a man who loves her for herself. She and her Aunt Kate move to another town and Betty gets a job as a department store sales clerk, incognito. She falls in love with her supervisor Tom, but realizes he won’t marry her if she’s rich and he’s poor. Betty arranges to have him “inherit” some money from a nonexistent rich relative, but Tom finds out and leaves. Betty decides to give her fortune away to charity in hopes of keeping Tom. Tom now knows she’s serious about him, and he says he’ll marry Betty even though she’s rich.
