Olympia Press was founded in Paris, France 1953 by Maurice Girodias; initially the publisher of now celebrated adult novels in English; the company relocated briefly to the USA during the 1960s, then to London in the early 1970s. Other incarnations of the company, some with Girodias' support, emerged in Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Later, Olympia Press was re-established and operating out of Washington, London, and Frankfurt.
