Western Publishing house ad for Deluxe Comics (alternatively known as “A Golden Special”), a pioneering forerunner to the “prestige format” comics of the ‘80s and beyond. Cover price for these initial issues was $1.50 each, at a time when standard comic magazines sold for 20 cents.

The first four issues (1973) were devoted to Disney’s Robin Hood, as seen in this ad. The next four (1974) had the umbrella title of “The Best of Walt Disney Comics” – and spotlighted seminal stories by Carl Barks and Floyd Gottfredson, and was the first time Barks and Gottfredson were ever credited by their American publisher.

By the later 1970s, Deluxe Comics would be rebranded as “Dynabrite Comics” and publish issues devoted to the various Disney characters, Star Trek, and Bugs Bunny.
