Arak, Son of Thunder
Arak; Satyricus
Something is stalking the streets of Thessalonika, killing anyone caught outside at night. In this panicky environment, someone as different as Arak is bound to attract unwanted attention. During a brawl with Byzantine soldiers, Arak is rendered unconscious and left outside for the invisible Stalker. But, he's rescued by a barmaid and her father, who reveal that they (through magical means) are the cause of the Stalker's existence; they plan to use it to drive the Byzantines from their city. However, when the Stalker (actually a hydra) attacks Satyricus, Arak manages to destroy it with fire.

Valda the Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden [Valda]; Chelchak; Kagan
During the war campaign against the Avars, Valda is captured and held prisoner by the Avars' head magician, Chelchak. He confesses that he has fallen in love with her, but the Avar leader demands that she be sacrificed to his prized carnivorous stallions. Chelchak refuses and displays his magical prowess by shape-shifting into a stallion, urging Valda to ride him to safety. After escaping, Chelchak asks Valda to forgive him, but she doesn't know why until she returns to her own camp. The previous night, a magical cloud had descended upon the camp, killing all the horses. The campaign is over.
