Arak, Son of Thunder
Arak; Iron Maiden [Valda]
The search for White Cathay continues. Arak and Valda are now in Byzantine territory and are taken prisoner by an army patrol. The leader of the patrol is convinced they are Slav spies and plans to kill them, but an eerie piping sound frightens the soldiers, driving them away. That night, the piping awakens Valda and lures her into a dance with a satyr. Meanwhile, a centaur lures Arak to the top of a nearby mountain, where Arak discovers his own likeness has been carved, larger-than-life, into the pinnacle of the mount.

The Viking Prince
Viking Prince [Jon]
Jon's arm has been re-attached, but it remains lifeless. In despair, he runs from the wise-woman's home and charges a pack of wolves, demanding that they end his now-useless existence. Evor the dwarf tries to rescue him and, touched by the dwarf's courage, Jon defends himself. Once again determined to find his lost sister, Jon, along with Evor and the silent minstrel, stalks into the wilderness. Soon, they find a boy and his pet hawk being tormented by Krogg the Red's minions. After the boy is saved, he insists on joining the motley band, and swears allegiance to Jon.
