Started shortly after World War 2, brother Alfred, John, and Sydney Pemberton were in the business of selling second-hand books in Manchester. They then started as publishers, specializing in annuals, dominating the market for decades. They continued publishing as World International starting in 1980. In 1991 they moved to new offices in Handforth, Cheshire, still operating as World International and publishing annuals in much lesser volume. 1999 saw the company acquired by Egmont World. A change of offices to Wilmslow, Cheshire in 2001 saw yet another change of company name to Egmont Children's Books (Egmont Books Limited). Annuals continued to be published, but any mention of World was removed from company logos.
